Overview
A single residence occupying the top two floors of a converted spice warehouse on Butler's Wharf. The brief was to keep the 1870s cast-iron frame visible from every room while inserting a contemporary envelope behind it, and to win back the river view the 1980s conversion had walled off.

Community & Innovation
The double-height living space is carried on the original columns with no new vertical structure at all, which is what made the open plan possible inside a listed shell. Ninety-four per cent of the glazing removed during the works was recycled on site into the new balustrade panels.
Conclusion
Grand Penthouse shows that a listed industrial frame is a constraint worth designing with rather than around. The warehouse reads as a warehouse from the water and as a house from the inside, and the two never argue.
